1. Sfeereh Hike

Sfeereh, a surprisingly amazing small village located in Donniyeh

In this tiny village, we will see three Roman temples, one of which is well preserved, another partially built, and a third one that still has some remnants on the hill directly on top the other two.
The first, well preserved one, is El Sfeereh fortress that was built in the early third century, during the rule of the Roman leader, Speeros from which derives the name of the village. The emperor remained four years in the region and this temple had constructed to commemorate his name.  The temple is almost whole, lacking only the pediment and the cornice. It is made of huge blocks of stone in a rectangular shape. The castle is an equivalent to a range of temples and a station for caravans heading from the coast towards the Bekaa and the other way round.
The hike in Sfeereh is one a kind combining historical ruins, dense forests and amazing views overlooking the area
The forest is so dense that sunlight can barely reach the ground. We will then reach to a panoramic spot where the Akkar plains and the Mediterranean coast can be seen. During our hike, we will encounter a lot of old stone houses that have amazing stories to tell.
Our hike will be divided into two levels:
LEVEL 4 and LEVEL 6 will walk together starting from the Roman temples.
After the educational visit the temples, we will head on a varied trail fluctuating among dense forests and exposed scenic spots.
We will have a lunch break along the way on a hilltop overlooking extraordinary views.

Afterwards, we will head to the village of Sfeereh.
LEVEL 4 will take a ride in a small van/pick-up truck to get back to the bus.
LEVEL 6 will walk a steep uphill, about 2 km long, to meet with Level 4.

3. Blawza Annoubine Hike

One can never get enough of Annoubine, because it is such a beautiful region. This is why we always go visit it. However, the trail that we will follow this time suits a big majority of people who would like to visit Annoubine. The trail comprises no uphill and its’ downhill is not very steep. Also, it is not a very long trail (only 9 KMs), with so many amazing views and landscapes).

We will have a Level 4 hike for everyone. We will start our walk in the village of Blawza, and pass by St. Marina Monastery, whose chapel now holds the tombs of eighteen patriarchs from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The chapel of St. Marina stands in the memory of a girl named Marina who entered Annoubine monastery disguised as a monk.  (The whole story will be told during the hike).

After St. Marina’s Monastery, we will go see Deir Saidet Annoubine, which is one of the oldest Monasteries in Lebanon. The monastery was built in a rocky pit, most probably by Byzantine emperor Theodos the Great in 379 – 395. The walls of the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary are decorated with mural paintings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The monastery was rehabilitated in 1990 and is now used by the Antonine Sisters who welcome pilgrims to spend the night.

Let s go to Assi River for rafting. The drive is long a bit, but it’s worth every minute of it!

We will stop on our way to visit Mar Maroun Cave, the source of Assi River, and the Ammou in Hermel. Mar Maroun Cave is one of a series of caves connected by stone steps just a few hundred meters west of the spring of el-Zerqa, on the south bank of Assi River. The main cave known as Mar Maroun Monastery (Cave of the Monks) was destroyed back in the 7th Century. It was originally constructed for builders working on the canalization channels and Hermel Pyramid (Ammou El-Hermel) in 200 B.C.; it became a sanctuary in 425. The Ammou stands on a hilltop surrounded by desert while its meaning and origin are still unknown until date. The pyramid has some beautiful carvings and was recently restored.

Rafting is one of the most amazing water activities during summer for adrenaline junkies and sports enthusiasts, especially in the abundant and clean waters of Assi River where pure breathtaking beauty surrounds you.
Once you get to Assi, a short presentation on the basics of rafting will be presented. You will be given the necessary equipment (helmet, oars, life jacket). Each raft will carry around 6 to 8 passengers accompanied by a professional coach. Then off you go to experience a wild adventure in the river!  The ride is long; you will follow the white stream and cross three or more waterfalls that will pump high your adrenaline! You will surely get wet so leave your phone and camera on land.
After this ride, you will rest and have lunch (trout and regional specialties).

NOTE: This rafting club in Assi is our co-partner. Many of you will probably enjoy doing many rafting trips during summer. Just contact Vamos Todos to get your tickets, and you can raft any time you wish. New trails… new grounds… new discoveries.
This hike comes along with a bonus!  You get to see a great temple, still in good shape, built with massive blocks and decorated with detailed engravings.  It is one of the best preserved temples in Lebanon as all four walls are upright. This temple is from the second century AD and is located in Ain Horcha. You will hike to it from a village called Tannoura.

The hike will be divided into two levels.
At the beginning, both levels will start together from Tannoura, each at a different pace. The trail will be along a cliff overlooking breathtaking views until you reach the temple. After visiting it, you will continue to Ain Horcha village.

LEVEL 3 will then take the bus to Ain Ata, for lunch.  In this level, you will have many rests and enough time to take pictures.
LEVEL 6 will continue on foot from Ain Horcha to Ain Ata to meet with the others for lunch. Note that this level needs competence and there will be minimal time for rest and photo sessions.

Lunch will be at the women’s association in Ain Ata. These women produce many homemade products and a variety of handwork items.  Buying some of these products will encourage the local community to hang on to their village and proceed with their ordinary life. It is our duty to help sustain citizens living in such remote places to carry on.
They are going to prepare for us a traditional lunch too! We’ve done it before and it was perfect.  We promise you the best lunch ever!

You will get the chance to visit a grape press on our way back.  You will learn how the production is carried out, and you’ll have the chance to buy the freshest products…straight from the source!

To complement the journey, we will start with a moderate hike in one of the most beautiful villages of the area, Ain Zebde. With time and ages, people started to come and live next to this convent creating a small village that was later on called Deir Mimas

There will be a two level hike, but both levels will start together, divide along the way, to meet again and divide one last time.

Both levels will start from Deir Saidet Mayfouk (1746 AD) where you will see a very old icon (that of Our Lady of Elige), the oldest icon in Lebanon.
From there, you will hike until you reach a cave carved in the rocks.  It is St. Charbel Chapel.
Hiking a bit further in picturesque scenery will lead you to a very old abandoned church, that of Mar Saba.  The view from there is wonderful, and you will love the two huge oak trees beside the church.

Then the group will be divided into two levels.
Level 3 will take an easy path while level 6 will hike along a harder one until they meet at a historical monastery, Deir Mar Geryes.

Once again, the two groups will hike together. There will be a lunch stop beside a traditional water source, where you can drink fresh water and enjoy amazing views.

The path will then lead you to Kattara to visit Deir Mar Challita (1848 AD).
Level 3 will have ample time to visit, then will take the bus to the old monastery of Our Lady of Elige (1120 AD). There cannot be any doubt that this monastery is one of the most ancient in Lebanon. According to historians, it has been known to exist ever since the year 850 A.D.  Saint Charbel Makhlouf spent nearly a year there. Mention should be made of the fine architecture of the arcades, the colonnades and the barrel vaulting.

Level 6 will go on foot to Ram, and from there to the monastery of Our Lady of Elige.
Hope you’ll have a great time!
