Except for the extremely intrepid, Afghanistan isn't shaping up to be a viable traveler destination in 2009. Some visitors were beginning to return following the ousting of the Taliban in 2001, but early 2008 saw a return to regular and devastating violence, with Taliban-linked bomb attacks rising sharply. Current president Hamid Karzai won his five-year mandate in October 2004, meaning that elections way be on the cards for 2009. For those who do decide to travel here, Afghanistan remains home to a wealth of historical and archaeological wonders, and some stunningly dramatic scenery.
