This pair of islands are the mismatched siblings of the Caribbean. Touted as having a different beach for every day of the year, Antigua is a bubbling, ultra-welcoming destination, with beautiful backdrops and stunning sunsets. Head here in April 2009 for the 23rd annual yacht regatta – the region's largest – or in August for its heady Carnival; there's some sort of cheerful, colourful event, often involving cricket, hosted by the island almost every month. Quiet Barbuda is a birdwatcher's bliss. Its huge rookery, frigate-bird sanctuary and deserted beaches, with only basic facilities, is a far cry from the rum punch and partying of Antigua. It's still unusually undeveloped for the Caribbean.
