The eighth largest country on earth has experienced phenomenal recent growth in its annual tourist figures, with another keen rise forecast for 2009 and 2010. Currently overseen by its second female president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner – who took over the position from her husband - Argentina may still be in economic recovery, but it has plans to cash in on its ever-burgeoning tourism potential. Aside from spectacular festivals, including the January Buenos Aires Tango Festival and the incredible Gualeguaychu Carnaval in February, it has a keen eye on ecotourism. The tourism sector is fast developing throughout its extensive national parks network, its eight World Heritage sites and into bleak, unpeopled Patagonia tipped by Tierra del Fuego, the fabled 'land of fire'. |
