The easternmost Caribbean island, with no neighbours for a good 160km, Barbados is tightly packed, highly developed, a perennial tourist favourite, and enjoys a superior standard of both literacy and living. Its Bajan population may have never quite lost the penchant for all things British, but the local specialities of flying-fish-fry and a good glass of Mount Gay rum are decidedly on the menu. Look out for cricket matches, a Bajan obsession, and for the Crop Over festival – an old-time celebration of the sugar-cane harvest which gets going at the end of July and culminates in a lavish costumed parade on the first Monday in August, Kadooment Day.
