As beguiling images of Bosnia-which is 52% forest and mountain - circulate in greater numbers than dismal news stories, memories of the country as a war-ravaged nation are being replaced by a growing curiosity. It has been over 10 years since the war ended and Bosnia is more than ready to move forward – EU membership beckons and Mine Action hopes to get rid of the country's remaining unexploded ordnance by 2009. It's a good job too – the countryside is simply begging to be explored: Rakitnica Canyon (which is great for hiking) and the primeval forest of Perucica remain untouched, while a trip to the well-run ecovillage of Umoljani will give visitors a glimpse of traditional life – and an idea of the country's tourism potential.
