With the TV version of the smash hit No 1 Ladies Detective Agency having hit the screens in 2008, it is not hard to see why Botswana's tourism potential has surged skyward, and will in all likelihood continue that way. However, while tourism figures continue to climb, the average life expectancy has plummeted shockingly and now stands at just 50.55 years for men. Dismally, one in three Batswana are infected with UIV, though the country is striving to tackle this with a laudably comprehensive treatment programme. Tourism here is not yet designed for the budget traveller. The government's policy has been decidedly low-volume, high-end, in order to conserve the country's precious natural resources. This means that if you can afford to travel in this land, you'll find that you'll have Botswana's spectacular parks and reserves pretty much to yourself. |
