In 2005 and 2006, two ceasefires were signed, intended to bring an end to the violence that had plagued Burundi - one of the poorest countries on earth - since its independence in 1962. However, it remains a volatile and unpredictable spot, with frequent bursts of violence and subsequent curfews. Foreign offices currently advise against all travel to the country. If and when things do eventually cool down, travelers will finally be able to trek out to Burundi's several beautiful national parks, as well as visit the spot where HM Stanley allegedly had his famous 'Dr Livingstone, I presume?' moment way back in 1871.
