Cameroon has a few troublesome neighbors and its border regions (particularly with Chad and the Central African Republic) should be avoided due to the threat of banditry. But the country rewards the relatively few travelers who make it here to discover its charms. Mt Cameroon, West Africa's highest peak, makes for challenging trekking, while Cameroon's beaches are a delight for lazing with a book and an ice-cold beer. Ecotourism, too, is increasingly becoming a draw here, with a number of new Cameroon-based companies offering specialized tours of the country's natural highlights. The Unesco world Heritage-rated Dja Faunal Reserve is one such treasure: one of Africa's largest and best-preserved rainforests, where numerous endangered species reside in safety.
