Chad ranks sorrowfully high on a hot-list of places to avoid. In February 2008, rebel forces attacked N'Djamena in another attempt to overthrow the president, prompting a state of emergency in several regions. And this is only the latest in a long, long history of violence and forcible domination. But when things do finally cool down, there's plenty to bring the adventurous, nature-loving traveler to Chad. Perhaps the highlight of the country is the glorious Zakouma National Park which, despite tragic elephant slaughters at the hands of poachers, is one bright point of success in Chad's recent, frequently tragic history.
