Heading to Boiling Lake via the Valley of Desolation might sound like the stuff of Conan Doyle, but Dominica's rugged natural charms do have that Boys' Own-adventure air. It's a far cry from the lazy beaches of its Caribbean island neighbors. Still largely the preserve of intrepid tourists seeking nature-filled exhilaration, Dominica sees a mere 70,000 or so tourists a year, which has helped preserve its green and glistening state. For a taste of what to expect (though sadly minus Johnny Depp) watch Pirates of the Caribbean which was filmed here and, while in residence in Roseau, don't miss a game of cricket (the island's obsession) at Dominica's spanking new 8000-seat Windsor Stadium. Visit soon, while the island's airports are still too small to take commercial-sized airliners.
