El Salvador is fast emerging as one of the planet's hottest surf spots. Though wide-scale tourism remains very much in its infancy, canny travelers are hitting the waves at La Libertad, El Este and elsewhere with aplomb. Now is without doubt the time to go before others hone in on its manifold charms, which include volcanoes, national parks and gorgeous, near-deserted islands. Ecotourism, too, is beginning to take hold, with spots such as Chaguantique (a protected tropical forest) and Bosque El Imposible (a beautiful and barely visited national park) perfect for observing wildlife without another visitor about for miles.
