Though it's a decidedly difficult country to travel in at present – with government permits required for all travel outside Asmara, and landmines peppering border regions – those intrepid enough to give it a whirl will find a number of interesting and all-but-abandoned sights. Probably the greatest draw is the Dankalia region, which has recently gained some publicity in the international press as one of the world's most inhospitable places. Travel here is bleak, hot and tiring and, with the least to see of any travel destination, there is no particular reason to do it but for travel's sake alone. Still, if journeying through great empty spaces soothes and empties the mind, this is without question the place to clear out the cobwebs.
