When it comes to Fiji, memory seems to be short. As soon as the 2006 coup (the fourth since 1987) installed Commodore Frank Bainimarama as the country's leader, the country launched new tourism campaigns targeting 'flash packers', to promote its new low-cost resorts. With elections set for 2009 there could be hiccups, though politics hasn't stopped Australians and New Zealanders hopping over to Fiji for mini-breaks or honeymoons. Despite stunning beaches and world-class snorkeling, the highlights are cultural: drinking kava with village elders or watching a meke (dance). Perhaps it's because they know how important tourism is to the island nation, but Fijian friendliness survives any political upheaval.
