The winter-sun destination for frost-weary Europeans in search of something a little bit exotic, tiny Gambia is firmly on the charter plane flight-path. But there's still something left to see outside the plush resorts and five-star hotels, which seem to make an almost unbroken line along Gambia's 80km of Atlantic coast. Head inland and you'll find a good few eco-lodges and a number of small but diverse national parks such as the exceedingly well-run Abuko Nature Reserve. If you're here during the summer, don't miss 2009's 10th International Roots Festival, a celebration of the country's culture and heritage, held between June and July.
