Operating as an air hub for the Pacific Islands, Guam is always busy. Ironically it's a destination that could never be mistaken for a 'Pacific paradise'. Many visitors are drawn to the duty-free shopping, which has earned the island the tag of 'America in Asia' with visiting northeast-Asian bargain hunters. Other visitors are more of a captive audience, doing their duty serving as part of a major US military presence which pre-dates WWII and acted as a crucial strategic link in that conflict. With the US beginning a major transfer of marines in from Okinawa in 2010, Guam's future will definitely feature more khaki.
