A few social and political hiccups have brought the threat of instability to what's long been considered a dependably steady country in a restive region. Travelers heading to Guinea should monitor the situation carefully but not call off plans to visit. Like many of its neighbors, tourism isn't yet a major concern for this country. Its principal hope is that a major oil discovery in the next few years will skyrocket its economy. Until the black stuff emerges, Guinea remains a laid-back destination, roughly the size of the UK, where you can trek through wilderness, climb Mt Nimba's peak or soothe yourself on Cape Verga's mellow sands.
