Like a number of its Central American neighbors, Honduras offers that compelling combination of lush wilderness, exceptional wildlife, poor infrastructure and a violent past, so enticing to the adventurous traveler. Though tourism is steadily increasing, especially around the diver-friendly Caribbean Bay Islands, it's still a great location to trek without seeing another soul, wander around eerily empty ruins, and discover the Mosquito Coast (though it's worth taking along your insect repellent since it lives up to its name). Perhaps the biggest draw is the immense Reserva de la Biosfero del Rio Platano, Central America's largest tropical rainforest and a Unesco World Heritage site for almost three decades. Visit in February or March to see a multitude of migrating birds. |
