With recent kidnappings of foreign oil workers throwing visitors' security into question, Nigeria's reputation for bad deeds is, sadly, extending beyond the realms of internet con artists. Add to this a rise in violent crime in Lagos, and it doesn't exactly seem to be welcoming tourists with open arms. If you're planning on visiting anyway, keep a close watch on the news, especially since religious tensions are always seething under the surface. And allow plenty of time to obtain a visa – in late 2007 Bill Gates was initially denied a tourist visa on the grounds that he might stay and prove a strain on the welfare system.
