If events of 2009 follow those of previous years, Pakistan won't be a viable destination for most travelers for a while. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in late 2007 shook the country, while waves of terrorist attacks, especially in the northwest, rocked its cities. It's a great shame that the massive country won't be hosting more visitors soon since there's unquestionably so much on offer. History buffs will have a field day exploring the Mughal treasures of Lahore, the mountain trekking is simply sublime and the long-fabled Karakoram Highway, part of the ancient Silk Road to China, passes the breathtaking Hunza Valley in the north. If you do decide to travel here, monitor the news carefully and heed local warnings.
