CAPITAL PORT MORESBY – POPULATION 5.8 MILLION – AREA 452,860 SQ KM - OFFICIAL LANGUAGE PIDGIN
The word you hear most about PNG is ‘potential’. Whether it’s ecotouring to find tree kangaroos and the huge Queen Alexandra butterfly or discovering WWII wrecks while diving at Rabaul, the country promises a variety of outdoor experiences. Then there’s the diversity of people who speak more than 850 languages and predominantly lead traditional lives in rural areas. Yet only 2 % of the Pacific’s holidaymakers visit PNG. Many are dissuaded by security issues such as violent crime in Port Moresby and Mt Hagen, plus the volatile no-go zone around Panguna mine in Bouganville. You be the judge.
