Though Paraguay has developed lately into a great place for an off-the-beaten-track adventure, 2007 saw outbreaks of both dengue fever and yellow fever marring its reputation as another 'new' destination for the intrepid traveller. Since there's no vaccination against dengue fever, it may well be that Paraguay's aspirations to become a new tourist hotspot are, for the moment at least, dampened, and potential tourists are being advised by their foreign offices back home to stay away. When the epidemics do blow over, there's much to recommend a trip to Paraguay – its arboreal highlights ranging from serene subtropical rainforests to the dense and forbidding thorn forests of Defensores del Chaco.
