Rich in gas and oil, and served by one of the world's very best airlines, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of tourist visas being issued for Qatar. Those who come here, either to experience Qatar or as part of a stopover en route to elsewhere, won't be short of entertainment. Kite boarding along the country's plentiful coastline is a current favourite, while exploring the dunes around the vast saltwater inlet at Khor al-Adaid is one of Qatar's premier attractions. Sporting types should look out for the Qatar Masters golf championships in January 2009, the Emir GCC Camel Race finals in April, and Doha's Powerboat Races in November. More cerebral urges can be satisfied by the citywide Doha Cultural Festival in February and March.
