Once, Saint Lucia was famous for nothing more than a whole lot of bananas, but nowadays tourism is the undisputed watchword. With the Caribbean’s largest tourism conference hosted here in January 2009, and the country regularly topping polls as the UK’s favourite overseas wedding destination, things are not as calm and sedentary as in days past. Nevertheless, its beaches haven’t suffered much under the tourist invasion, despite the planeloads of package holidaymakers who descend on a fortnightly basis, and the island still hosts a wealth of serene natural treasures. Bathe in the mineral waters of the Malgretout Waterfall or trek up to the Qualibou volcano for an idyllic taste of the good old quiet life.
