CAPITAL DAKAR - POPULATION 12.5 MILLION - AREA 196,190 SQ KM -OFFICIAL LANGUAGE FRENCH

Suave and sophisticated Senegal bursts with reasons to visit, not least its prolific arts scene and world-class festivals: the vast Festival Mondial Des Artes Negres will hit breezy Dakar in December 2009 and the wonderful biannual Dak'Art Biennale is in 2010. This West African beauty sees a solid amount of annual tourism (mostly from France and Spain), largely in its beach destinations around the Petite Cote. Tourist itineraries will one day include the beaches around Cap Skiring in the southwestern Casamance region, often off-limits due to occasional outbreaks of fighting and lawlessness. If you're planning on making it down here, heed local advice before heading out.
