You don’t hear bad things about Slovenia – pretty, compact, stable in the face of its more volatile neighbours, it’s where Austrians go to get away from it all. And now it’s garnering a following among others wanting a dose of lakes, mountains and authentic hospitality. The country’s hotspots have been a little isolated, but plans are afoot to improve transport and map out cycle trails to help you get to Slovenia’s best bits. Highlights include grassroots wine tours in Posavje (which see thirsty punters sleeping in home stay cottages) and the floral spectacle around Lake Bohinj, celebrated annually since May 2007, during the International Wild Flower Festival.
