Unless you are Dutch you may be forgiven for thinking – like many seasoned travelers have before you – that Suriname is situated somewhere not too far from Vietnam. Few people know that this country of the eastern South American seaboard has the most ethnically diverse population on the continent, and few travelers make it here to find out. But this fascination place, filled with Dutch colonial architecture, natural wonders and wildlife galore, is slowly creeping onto ecotourists’ and adventure-travelers’ itineraries, and with good reason. Trek its 1.6 million hectares of gorgeous rainforest at the World Heritage-listed Central Suriname Nature Reserve, then party along to Christian, Hindu or Islamic festivals, of which there are an abundance.
