CAPITAL LOME - POPULATION 5.7 MILLION - AREA 56,785 SQ KM -OFFICIAL LANGUAGE FRENCH
Following its free and, by Togo's standards, democratic legislative elections in late 2007, it seems that calm has been officially sanctioned in tiny Togo. Already back on the more innovative traveller's circuit, those in the know favour Anejo Beach for a spot of seaside relaxation on the Bight of Benin, not far from the balmy coastal capital Lome and its bustling markets that sell everything. Upcountry, the Tamberma Valley is a unique sight, with its fortified tata homes (castle-like compounds), founded in the 17th century by those escaping slavery in Benin. If there's a sign of things to come in Togo, this is it: tour guides are already congregating in droves, ready to pounce on the unwitting traveller. Visit soon, before the tour-guide culture takes over nationwide.
