CAPITAL PORT-OF-SPAIN – POPULATION 1.1 MILLION – AREA 5128 SQ KM – OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ENGLISH

Heading to this Caribbean odd-couple in 2009? The time to hit Trinidad’s capital is just before Ash Wednesday, when the Carnival bursts into town in all its calypso glory. Tourism provides a steady (but not yet explosive) income to these little and large islands, which rely heavily on international business, steel and liquefied natural gas exports. Here you’ll likely experience a far more local vibe than at many other Caribbean destinations. But there are fears for Tobago’s icing-sugar beaches, which are suffering from the tourist onslaught. To give something back, check out SOS Tobago, which is helping to preserve Tobago’s leatherback turtles.
