Long an option in package-holiday brochures, bewitching Tunisia has recently taken an up market twist. To make the most of a stay in its new slew of boutique hotels, especially in Tunis's medina area and in atmospheric Carthage, visit in summer 2009 and catch a host of international festivals. Along with the El-Jem International Symphonic Music Festival in July, there's the Carthage International Festival (July and August), whose dance, theatre and music performances take place within the Roman theatre itself. Later in the year, look out for the biennial Carthage International Film Festival in October, with its emphasis on African and Middle Eastern film fare. To escape the crowds on Tunisia's many glorious beaches, heap up to the quiet north coast or to delicious El-Mansourah, near Kelibia on Cap Bon.
