CAPITAL SAN'A - POPULATION 23 MILLION - AREA 527,970 SQ KM -OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ARABIC
In 2007 and 2008 Yemen remained quite a risky destination for tourists, with terrorist attacks rattling San'a and resulting in the deaths of several foreigners. It looks likely that 2009 will continue in the same vein, with foreign offices warning against all but essential travel. In case this does change you'll find a country ripe for exploration, with historic sights and souqs galore. It's also becoming quite a target for adventure-hungry surfers, who are hitting its shores between May and September, though not without the attendant tour operator and fistful of permits. If you weren't born a water baby, the World Heritage-listed Old City of San'a is well worth dipping into.
